Around the SEC East: Kiffin says McCluster has NFL future at tailback

by Jon McDonald

TENNESSEE After getting an up-close and personal view of Ole Miss running back/wide receiver Dexter McCluster, Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin thinks there is a future for the speedy Rebel in the NFL. Kiffin says the key to McCluster’s game is the unique combination of being small and fast. Comparing him to Tennessee Titans running back Chris Brown, Kiffin says McCluster will probably run a 4.3 second 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine. When asked where McCluster’s future was in the NFL, Kiffin … Read More »

Around the SEC West: Miles gets Jefferson back

by Jon McDonald

LSU Coach Les Miles says that quarterback Jordan Jefferson will be healthy enough to play against the  Rebels this week after suffering an ankle injury against Alabama two weeks ago. Backup quarterback Jarrett Lee got the start against Louisiana Tech last week, but couldn’t find a rhythm. With Jefferson now back at starter, Miles knows he still might have to rely on Lee at some point this season. SEC East Rewind

by Jon McDonald

Gold star: Florida. Going 8-0 in the SEC during the regular season is a major accomplishment. The last time the Gators accomplished the feat was in 1996, and they went on to win the national championship that year. Florida is in the driver’s seat to get a fourth ring if it can get past Alabama in the SEC title game. Silver star: Georgia’s running game. Running backs Caleb King and Washaun Ealey sparked the Bulldogs’ offense in the second half, scoring … Read More »

Around the SEC West: Mullen says Tide are co-No. 1

by Adam West

MISSISSIPPI STATE Florida might be the No. 1 team in the BCS standings, but Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen sees Alabama as the co-No. 1. No matter how you rank them, both teams are loaded with talent and the Bulldogs will have their hands full against the Tide on Saturday in Starkville. Around the SEC East: Meyer has confidence in Sturgis

by Adam West

FLORIDA One of the reasons Florida is not scoring as many points as last year is coach Urban Meyer’s confidence in the defense and kicker Caleb Sturgis. Meyer has not taken as many gambles in short-yardage situations as he did in previous years because of how solid his defense is playing and how consistent the strong-legged Sturgis has been. Sturgis made both of his field goal tries last week, including a 45-yarder in the second quarter. The previous game against Georgia was even … Read More »

SEC East Rewind

Gold star: Ryan Stamper. With Brandon Spikes suspended for the game, Stamper stepped in and got it done again. He moved from outside to middle linebacker and helped Florida limit Vanderbilt to three points. Stamper also had his second interception in two weeks. Silver star: Morgan Newton. OK, it was only Eastern Kentucky. But give the freshman credit for managing the game for Kentucky. He completed 20-of-29 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Bronze star: Alshon Jeffrey. … Read More »

SEC West Rewind

by Pat Dooley

Gold star: Julio Jones. The sensational receiver had been underachieving and got his coach so mad that Nick Saban spiked his headset. But Jones made up for it with the play of the game, a 73-yard touchdown on a bubble screen. Jones finished with four catches for 102 yards. Silver star: Jevan Snead. The Ole Miss quarterback has had a spotty season but bounced back into form with a four-touchdown day, two rushing and two passing. The Rebels handled Northern Arizona, … Read More »

Around the SEC East: No father-son time for the Kiffins

by Jon McDonald

TENNESSEE Coach Lane Kiffin enjoys having his father Monte as his defensive coordinator, but the two don’t get much father-son time during the season. “It’s pretty much all work, except when my mom needs more tickets, then he’ll com talk to me,” Kiffin said. The younger Kiffin also said that having his dad on staff has helped with recruiting both offensive and defensive players. Lane says that the recruits like Monte so much that even offensive players want to talk with him on … Read More »

Around the SEC West: Nutt knows his role

by Jon McDonald

OLE MISS Coach Houston Nutt knows how to give direction to his players, but taking direction is a different story.
