Around the SEC West: Saban responds to tape controversy

by Jon McDonald

ALABAMA
Even after a big win over South Carolina last week, Alabama can’t get away from “Tape-Gate.”

In  reference to South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier’s complaint about Alabama’s use of tape to spot the ball for field goals and extra points, coach Nick Saban said he didn’t know anything about it.

Saban also said that many kickers around the country use something to mark where the ball should be spotted, whether it be a piece of grass or mud.
The coach even said that he saw evidence of a South Carolina kicker using tape to spot the ball in another game.

LSU
Coming off a bye week, LSU knows the key to beating Auburn is defense.
Coach Les Miles says his defense is improving weekly, and the off week helped it fix some things after the team’s first loss of the season.

Miles says the team understands that it still has everything on the table, including the SEC Championship game in December. He also said his team took the Florida loss “with a grain of salt” as far as how it affected the season’s goals.

LSU will likely have to win out, and beat Alabama, to make the SEC Championship game. That all starts with a big SEC West tilt against Auburn on Saturday.

OLE MISS
The Rebels know that Arkansas will be a formidable opponent this week, and not just because their coach used to hold the same position for the Razorbacks.

This time, coach Houston Nutt knows his team has some challenges with the ‘Backs’ offense. Nutt said his defense will have its hands full with quarterback Ryan Mallett who has taken his game “to another level.”

Arkansas’ defense is no pushover, either. Nutt noted that the Razorbacks held Florida’s offense in check last week and that his offense will have its hands full.

MISSISSIPPI STATE
Coach Dan Mullen has no plans of being a gracious host this week when Florida comes to town.

Mullen hopes there will be a record crowd on Saturday, and that the whole state of Mississippi is behind the Bulldogs as they look to pull an upset.
The Bulldogs have come close to upsetting two ranked teams in Starkville this season, No. 9 LSU and No. 12 Georgia Tech.

Last week: Beat Middle Tennessee State 27-6
This week: Hosts Florida, 7:30 p.m. on ESPN

AUBURN
Gene Chizik knows his team has a tall task winning at LSU this week. LSU is coming off a bye after losing to Florida the previous week.

Auburn is mired in a two-game losing streak of its own, dropping games to Arkansas and Kentucky.

LSU had won 32-straight home games at night before losing to Florida, so Auburn will try to extend that losing streak a week after falling to the Wildcats.

Last week: Lost to Kentucky 21-14
This week: At LSU, 7:30 p.m., on ESPN2

ARKANSAS
The Razorbacks take no solace in the fact that the SEC said a personal foul penalty in last week’s Florida game that led to a touchdown shouldn’t have been called.

“The loss was still tough to take,” said Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino. Petrino also said that he needed to address the recanted call with his team in order to get past it.

Petrino said he was happy with the way his defense played against the Gators, and that they played similarly well against UF in 2008 until the fourth quarter.

Last week: Lost to Florida 23-20
This week: At Ole Miss, 12:21 on Fox
