SEC West Rewind

by gssports

Gold star: Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett. The sophomore threw for 313 yards and five touchdowns in a win over Mississippi State. In a season of ups and downs for the Razorbacks, Mallett has been a consistent force. The SEC will be a more exciting league if Mallett decides to return for his junior season.

Silver star: Ole Miss. The Rebels turned in a classic performance in beating LSU, and running back/wide receiver Dexter McCluster played an important role again. A week after setting a school record for most rushing yards in a game (282), McCluster rushed for 148 yards and threw a touchdown pass. The Rebels (8-3) have cemented themselves as one of the league’s hottest teams.

Bronze star:Mark Ingram. The running back moved into second place on Alabama’s career rushing list against Tennessee-Chattanooga on Saturday, passing Shaun Alexander and Glen Coffee. The sophomore needs only 73 yards to surpass Bobby Humphrey as the Tide’s all-time leading rusher. Not bad for his first season as starter.

No star: LSU coach Les Miles. The mad hatter himself told reporters after a loss to Ole Miss that he would have to figure out why his quarterback spiked the ball as time expired against Ole Miss on Saturday. Miles might want to take a look at this video, which shows him giving his quarterback a spike signal before the final play:

Quote: “I told the players if we had lost this game (Saturday), there would be nothing else that would tarnish what you’ve accomplished more than that. You would someday be an NFL player in a Mercedes-Benz and roll your window down to talk to a pretty girl and she’d say, ‘You lost to Chattanooga when you played at Alabama.’ Nobody would ever forget that one.” - Alabama coach Nick Saban on the Tide playing Tennessee-Chattanooga on Saturday
