Around the SEC West: Auburn tries to avoid snowball effect

by Adam West

AUBURN Gene Chizik’s Tigers started off the season red hot, winning their first five games before losing the past three. Auburn will now try to avoid the snowball effect with a solid performance against Ole Miss. Chizik said a key to the game will be containing Rebels quarterback Jevan Snead and his talented group of receivers. The Tigers will try to get pressure on Snead to try to force him into making some mistakes. “I don’t think you can stop any quarterbacks in this … Read More »

Around the SEC East: Richt not a critic of UF offense

by Adam West

GEORGIA Many critics have blasted Florida’s offense this year, but Georgia coach Mark Richt is not one of them. Richt said Florida, which has the longest winning streak in the nation with 17 straight victories, probably doesn’t feel the need to stretch out defenses by taking a lot of shots downfield because of how effective the Gators’ running game has been. In response to a question about Richt using photos of Urban Meyer calling two late timeouts during Florida’s 2008 blowout win as … Read More »

SEC East rewind

by Pat Dooley

Gold star: Alshon Jeffrey. The true freshman wide receiver at South Carolina was the difference in South Carolina’s victory over Vandy, He caught passes totalling 161 yards for Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks. Silver star: Chris Rainey. The speedster has become kind of a forgotten man in the Florida backfield, but on Saturday night he rushed for 90 yards on 12 carries and scored a touchdown. Bronze star: Jonathan Crompton. It’s one thing to light up Georgia’s secondary, but Crompton threw for 265 yards … Read More »

SEC West rewind

Gold star: Terrence Cody. Mt. Cody got it done in a big way against Tennessee, blocking a pair of field goals to allow Alabama to escape with a 12-10 win. OK, Daniel Lincoln’s kicks were so low they were in danger of being blocked by gophers, but you have to give the big guy credit. Silver star: Johnthan Banks. So his mother was saving A’s for the rainy season when she gave him his name, but what a game for Banks. … Read More »

Around the SEC East: Kiffin says Bama ‘in your face,’ Florida ‘tricks you’

by Jon McDonald

TENNESSEE Tennessee is ready to play its second top-ranked team on the road this season when it faces Alabama. Coach Lane Kiffin said that while playing No. 1 teams is beneficial to his team, it is not something he focuses on during the week. When comparing Alabama to the last No. 1 team the Vols faced, Florida, Kiffin said the styles of both teams are very different. “One plays in-your-face downhill defense while the other tries to trick you by moving people around,” … Read More »

Around the SEC West: Saban responds to tape controversy

by Jon McDonald

ALABAMA Even after a big win over South Carolina last week, Alabama can’t get away from “Tape-Gate.” In  reference to South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier’s complaint about Alabama’s use of tape to spot the ball for field goals and extra points, coach Nick Saban said he didn’t know anything about it. Saban also said that many kickers around the country use something to mark where the ball should be spotted, whether it be a piece of grass or mud. The coach even said that … Read More »

SEC East rewind

Gold star: Rich Brooks. Aye you kidding me? Three straight losses and the starting quarterback out and you beat Auburn on the plains? Give Brooks credit for getting his team ready to play when so many of us figured this would be a seal-clubbing. Brooks used two quarterbacks to get it done and Randall Cobb ran for 109 yards and the game-winning score. Amazing. Maybe I was right about Gene Chizik after all. Silver star: Timmy Tebow. A bad day was … Read More »

SEC West rewind

by Pat Dooley

Gold star: Mark Ingram. South Carolina’s rugged defense knew exactly what was coming on the clinching 68-yard drive and they couldn’t stop Ingram. He accounted for all of the yards on the drive and finished with a Bryant-Denny Stadium record of 246 yards. Ingram is now officially a darkhorse Heisman candidate, whatever that means. Silver star: Anthony Dixon. Gators, you’d better be lifting weights this week. This guy is a load. He became Mississippi State’s leading rusher of all time on … Read More »

Around the SEC West: Tide not overlooking Gamecocks

by Adam West

ALABAMA Nick Saban may have the No. 2 team in the country, but he knows that the SEC has plenty of teams that can pull off an upset. This week, the Tide will have to worry about South Carolina (5-1) which is only four points away from being undefeated. The Gamecocks’ only loss this was a 41-37 loss at Georgia that came down to a late goal-line stand by the Bulldogs. Saban called the Gamecocks defense “outstanding” and praised coach Steve Spurrier for … Read More »

Around the SEC East: UF focused on Hogs’ offense

by Adam West

FLORIDA After last year’s contest in which Arkansas tailback Michael Smith ripped Florida for 133 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, coach Urban Meyer’s focus is on slowing down the speedy senior. Smith, who has been dealing with a hamstring injury, had his biggest game of the season last week in a 44-23 win over Auburn. He carried the ball 18 times for 145 yards and a score, so it seems like he’s feeling better. Meyer knows he has more than just … Read More »
